What is Canine Epilepsy?
Canine epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurring seizures (fits). It is one of the most common neurological conditions in dogs, affecting roughly 0.5–0.75% of the canine population. Epileptic seizures are caused by abnormal bursts of electrical activity in the brain and are defined by two or more unprovoked seizures at least 24 hours apart. Dogs with epilepsy experience episodic, brief seizures typically lasting under a few minutes, with various motor, autonomic, or behavioral symptoms. Epilepsy can arise from multiple causes – it may be inherited (idiopathic or genetic epilepsy), caused by an identifiable brain abnormality (structural epilepsy), or have an unknown origin.
A single seizure does not mean a dog has epilepsy – true epilepsy means repeated unprovoked seizures over time If your dog has a seizure, your veterinarian will determine if it was an epileptic seizure and investigate the cause before diagnosing epilepsy.
